Rating: ... G?
Type: Angst, drabble
Characters/Pairings: Ed-centric, implied Al/Win
A/N: ... this can really fit into either canon, first anime or manga/Brotherhood. Take your pick? I started this back in May and just found the half-finished document last night and decided to finish it up.
Thanks to Krunk for looking this over for me~
--hope to see you soon.
Following his name was a small inkblot. Edward had just managed to lift the pen from the page before he'd started to sign his full name and title. He was so used to signing forms all day at work that habit had led him to start outlining Elric right after the Edward and he'd barely stopped himself. Well, a splotch of black was better than 'Edward Elric, Fullmetal Alchemist'...
Resting his head on his hand and watching while the small, wet patch of ink dried, Ed wondered when he and Al had begun to write letters instead of call each other. And when they'd started to call instead of visit...
When their lives had become normal, of course. After he'd got Al's body back and they didn't have to run around looking for Stones and Homunculi and avoiding all sorts of trouble anymore.
Alphonse had a wife--had Winry--now. He had a daughter, Sara. More cats than he knew what to do with. He was happier than Ed had ever seen him and had everything that he needed to be that happy.
Ed... Ed had his job. Paperwork all day (he finally knew why Roy would sleep behind Riza's back and slack on his work); giving the occasional lecture to some newer State Alchemists about the finer points of Alchemy, because who better to do that than the Fullmetal Alchemist? It wasn't a bad job, he didn't hate it. But it was all he had.
He lived alone, had just a few acquaintances at work, wasn't spoken for in any sense of the term. Was Edward happy? ... not really. What did he need to be happy? Just one thing, but it was terribly far away now.
“Alphonse!” Ed gasped, a shiver running up his spine when he felt fur rubbing over his ankle. Reaching down, he brushed the small, golden cat's tail away from his leg and started to pet him. “You've got to stop sneaking up on me like that...”
So it wasn't exactly a replacement, but it was warm, and at least he got to say the name every day...
